July/August
A Christian baroness once living in the highlands of Nairobi, Kenya, hired a young national to be her houseboy. After three months, he asked her for letter of recommendation. He wanted to work for a friendly sheik that lived some miles away. The baroness didn’t wish the boy to leave, so she offered to increase his pay if he would stay and work for her. The young man assured her that he was not considering leaving her because he would receive a higher pay. When he came to work for her it was because he had wanted to see how Christians lived. But now he was going to work for the Muslim sheik to see if he might see how the believers in Islam lived. After that he would decide whether to become a Christian or a Muslim.
This young lad wasn’t going to read the Bible. He wasn’t going to look at his sins and see that only Jesus could take those sins away. He was going to base his faith solely on the basis of the living advertisements. The baroness was sorrowful, because she felt that she hadn’t been a very good advertisement for her faith. She said to the boy, why didn’t you tell me that’s why you came to work for me?
It is a shame that many Christians don’t realize that they are living advertisements for their faith. Just like little children watch their parents to learn how they should live; many unbelievers in the world are doing the same, watching us Christians. If we say all the right things, but do all the wrong things; they will conclude that Jesus has nothing to offer them and will ignore His call to eternal life.
That would be sad.
Being aware of this, we, as Christ’s people need to avoid a hypocritical lifestyle. Our cry should never be the sad cry of that baroness, why didn’t you tell me you judged my Savior by what I do and how I live? So let’s spend this summer and the rest of our lives being living billboards, advertisements for our Lord and Master.
God be with you and keep you safe.
