Pastor's Place

October

Many people enjoy the autumn season of the year. The air is crisp and cool at night (great for sleeping). It is not nearly as hot and humid and there is often a cool breeze during the day. Fall, in a word, is refreshing. Everyone wants to and needs to be refreshed.

That is also true about our relationship to God. We need to be refreshed and renewed each day we walk with our Lord. Our life of faith can become old, stale and stuffy. When that happens; we need refreshment!

If our house is stuffy; we open the windows and let in the fresh air.

Our faith and our closeness to the Lord, needs to be refreshed too.

This is what it says to do in the Book of Acts 3: 19: Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord!

Over time our sins make it impossible to have a close relationship to God. If our sins go unrepented, a separation occurs between us and our God (see Isaiah 59: 2). To repent means to change your heart and change your mind. When you know that your sins block the refreshing Presence of God from your personal life and from the life of your church; it’s time to get those sins out of the way.

I believe we all would agree that we want our lives and the life of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and School, to be a place where people can come and be refreshed. We want our Church and School to be a place where people are refreshed and want to come back over and over, because they are refreshed.

That is definitely God’s Will! It begins with our own personal relationship to the Lord. I have recently become refreshed in my faith. In fact, each day, if I am to be of any help to the people around me, I need to be refreshed and renewed! As my faith is renewed and refreshed, the Holy Spirit can use me to refresh others. The Lord’s mercy and compassion are fresh and new every morning; great is His faithfulness. Lamentations 3: 22-23.

Experience God’s refreshment each day in your life; ask the Holy Spirit to refresh you. Ask the Holy Spirit to refresh our Church and School. He’ll open the windows and the refreshing wind (same word as spirit in the Greek language) of God will blow through and make everything new! You will see and love the difference! The Lord is with us. Let the refreshing begin!

In Christ,

Pastor David
